Another dark day in Brazil: 2,032 deaths and over 73,600 cases in 24 hours

The Brazilian Ministry of Health announced yesterday Thursday that in the previous 24 hours another 2,032 patients with COVID-19 died and another 73,602 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed in the laboratory.

A day earlier, the country recorded an absolute record of 115,228 infections, a development that seemed to confirm that a third wave of the new coronavirus pandemic has now occurred.

The largest country in Latin America (212 million inhabitants) has so far recorded 509,141 deaths out of a total of 18.2 million infections with the virus. Brazil is the country with the second heaviest pandemic in the world, behind the United States alone, which mourns more than 600,000 dead. Brazilian experts describe the official numbers as very underestimated.

Mexico: 221 deaths and over 5,300 cases in 24 hours

The Mexican Ministry of Health announced on Thursday that another 221 patients with COVID-19 had died in the past 24 hours and another 5,340 cases of SARS-CoV-2 had been confirmed.

The death toll from the new coronavirus pandemic in the country of 126 million has reached 232,068 deaths out of a total of 2,493,087 infections, according to official figures.

The Mexican government acknowledges that the official report, the fourth heaviest in the world, is undervalued. Data on excess mortality released by the Ministry of Health in March showed that deaths due to COVID-19 are at least 60% more than confirmed.

Chile: First case of the Delta variant of the new coronavirus

The Chilean Minister of Health confirmed yesterday Thursday that the first case of the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 was diagnosed in the Latin American country, after the laboratory analysis of patient samples which was repatriated from the USA.

“We have officially confirmed the presence of a patient with the Delta variant, (the patient) traveled from the United States (of America) and entered (the territory) via Santiago airport,” said Enrique Paris, who spoke before Parliament.

The 43-year-old patient has been isolated. The detection of the Delta variant, which was originally identified in India, is a particularly worrying development as it is a strain of the virus that has undergone multiple mutations and is “much more contagious than the others we have identified,” Paris explained.

The Chilean Congress was expected to approve yesterday the extension of the 90-day state of emergency and allows for restrictive measures, such as the ban on night traffic that is in force.

The first case of the Delta variant was detected at a time when the country’s hospitals are under pressure due to the pandemic, despite the remarkable progress of the national immunization campaign (more than 80% of the target population has been vaccinated since February).

Given that Chile has relied on the Chinese Sinovac vaccine for COVID-19, questions are being raised as to whether this vaccine can offer protection against strains of the new coronavirus, especially the Delta variant.

The death toll from the new coronavirus pandemic had reached 31,797 dead by Thursday, out of a total of 1,531,872 infections.

Cuba: 1,880 cases and 16 deaths in 24 hours

One in five Cubans has already received at least one of the doses of COVID-19 vaccine developed on the island, Cuban scientists said on Thursday, before the drugs even received an emergency license, which is expected to be done within weeks. .

So far, “about 22% of the population has received at least the first dose,” said Eduardo Martines, president of the public pharmaceutical company BioCubaFarma, during a press conference, noting that this allowed a “significant reduction in the incidence” of the disease in the regions. where the population is now immunized.

The Cuban government, faced with a sharp rise in cases, launched a mass immunization campaign in May in the worst-hit areas. Scientists are working on five candidate vaccines, two of which, Abdala and Soberana 2, are in the final phase of clinical trials.

Cuba remains facing a wave of infections. Yesterday there were 1,880 cases of SARS-CoV-2 and 16 deaths due to COVID-19 – the second heaviest daily report since March 2020. The pandemic report has reached 1,209 deaths out of a total of 174,789 confirmed infections in the country.

Although these numbers do not compare to those in many other Latin American and Caribbean countries, the authorities are deeply concerned. The chief epidemiologist of the Ministry of Health, Francisco Duran, stressed yesterday the “complexity of the epidemiological situation”.

The Tunisian Ministry of Health announced on Thursday that 3,951 cases of SARS-CoV-2 had been confirmed in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of people infected in the Arab country to 395,362.

The deaths of 88 other COVID-19 patients have raised the death toll from a pandemic in the North African state to 14,406 so far, according to official figures.

Since the start of the immunization campaign in Tunisia on March 13, at least 1.66 million people have received the vaccine, of which nearly 446,000 have received both.
