According to the police, the suspect’s actions caused the flames to spread to an area of 8,000 square meters. “The entire incident was captured by a security camera. The images were analyzed, the perpetrator was identified and questioned at the headquarters of the city’s 1st Police Precinct, where he was indicted.”
Also on Monday, a 44-year-old man was arrested for starting a fire in São José do Rio Preto (440 kilometers from the city of São Paulo). “The perpetrator, who was on a motorcycle, was caught on security camera setting fire to a wooded area,” said the Civil Police.
On the 21st, a 26-year-old man was arrested in Guaraci (470 kilometers from the capital of São Paulo) for setting fire to a sugarcane field. The following day, a 76-year-old man was arrested for setting fire to garbage in a forest in São José do Rio Preto (156 kilometers from the city of São Paulo).
On Sunday (25), a 42-year-old man believed to be responsible for setting fire to vegetation in Batatais (354 kilometers from the capital of São Paulo) was arrested. On Monday, also in Batatais, another man, 27 years old, was arrested after setting fire to a pasture area and causing a fire.
None of the prisoners’ names were released.
The Environmental Military Police also reports that, in addition to the arrests, they applied more than R$15,000 in fines to two men, in Porto Ferreira (approximately 225 kilometers from the capital), for lighting fires to clear vegetation.
The Federal Police also opened investigations to determine responsibilities related to the forest fires.
