Another mourning for Queen Elizabeth: her closest friend has died

At ninety-five there Queen Elizabeth is facing another very painful mourning. The third in just over a month. Ivor Herbert, journalist and racehorse trainer, as well as longtime friend of Her Majesty, is died at the age of 96. The death occurred on January 5, but the news was confirmed only yesterday since Times.

According to Daily Mail, the former Coldstream Guards officer was a regular guest of Balmoral Castle in Scotland. Besides, it was him the trainer of the horse who in 1957 won the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Ivor Herbert also wrote the screenplay for the 1966 film The Great St.Trinian’s Train Robbery (The most battered robbery of the century), a comic version of an event that really happened three years earlier: the assault on the Glasgow-London postal train.

For the sovereign it is the third bereavement in just over a month. Last December in fact she had already found herself crying two women to whom she was very attached. Before Ann Fortune FitzRoy, Duchess of Grafton, his lady-in-waiting since 1967, disappeared at the age of 101. And then Lady Farnham, who after 44 years in the service of the queen died at 90. Leaving The Queen without one of her closest confidants.

“It was not a good year for the queen,” he wrote The Sun last December. “He lost her husband Filippo and then the Duchess of Grafton and now Lady Farnham, two Dear friends who have always supported it in official duties “. The loss of Ivor Herbert is but the latest in a series of mourning: thedose horribilis of the sovereign seems to have no end.

On the other hand, as pointed out by the Daily Mail «A sad consequence of a long life is that you have to say goodbye to many people you care about ». And in fact, the ninety-five-year-old queen over the years has cried so many people who were at the top of her heart. First of all his female cousin Margaret Rhodes. United since childhood, together with Balmoral during the Second World War (The scions of the royal family were moved to Scotland to protect them from bomb that fell on London), Margaret and Elizabeth never separated. When Rhodes became a widow in 1981, her friend and sovereign cousin proposed to her to become the lady-in-waiting of the Queen Mother. Margaret accepted and for eleven years she was Elizabeth’s mother’s closest confidant. There Rhodes passed away on November 25, 2016, at 91 years old. His death was announced in an official statement from Buckingham Palace and his funeral, in the Royal Chapel of All Saints in Windsor Great Park, was there his best friend, the queen, in distress.

Five years have passed since then. And the list of friends to cry for the queen has unfortunately never stopped growing. Inevitably, of course. But the last few months, for Elizabeth, must have been particularly hard.
