THE journalist Ricardo Lopez was killed yesterday Thursday in his northern part Mexico, one of the most dangerous in the world for media workers, local authorities announced.
“InfoGuaymas journalist Ricardo Lopez was recently killed in Guaymas (…). An investigation is underway, “the prosecutor’s office in Sonora, where Guimas is administratively affiliated, said via Twitter.
Ricardo Lopez, 47, was the director of the news site InfoGuaymas. Last month, he revealed during a press conference that he was receiving threats during his life because of his job.
“The press in Guimas is working under threat. “A complaint was filed with the attorney general,” he said at the time.
According to Mexican media, before taking over the management of InfoGuaymas, Ricardo Lopez had worked for the Televisa network in Sonora and in local newspapers.
His assassination comes six weeks after reporter Gustavo Sanchez was shot dead by gunmen in mid-June in the southern state of Oaxaca.
In May, journalist Benjamin Morales was also assassinated in Oaxaca.
Mexico is one of the most dangerous countries on the planet for journalists. More than a hundred have been killed since 2000, including eight in 2020.
More than 90% of crimes committed by media workers go unnoticed and unpunished, according to press freedom organizations.
