ANS expands coverage of plans for treatment of autism and other disorders

The Collegiate Board of the National Supplementary Health Agency (ANS) approved, on Thursday (23), a regulation that expands the rules of assistance coverage for users of health plans with global development disorders, among which the disorder on the autism spectrum (ASD).

As of July 1, 2022, coverage for any method or technique indicated by the attending physician for the treatment of a patient who has one of the disorders classified in ICD F84, according to the International Classification of Diseases, becomes mandatory.

According to the ANS, the regulation also adjusted Annex II of the list so that unlimited sessions with speech therapists, psychologists, occupational therapists and physical therapists encompass all global developmental disorders.

“We decided to establish mandatory coverage of the different methods or therapies not only for patients with ASD, but for users of health plans diagnosed with any disorder classified as a global developmental disorder”, said the director-president of ANS, Paulo Rebello, in communicated.

pervasive developmental disorders

Pervasive developmental disorder is characterized by a set of conditions that generate communication and behavior difficulties, impairing the interaction of patients with other people and the confrontation of everyday situations.

According to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) are considered pervasive developmental disorders:

  • childhood autism
  • atypical autism
  • Rett syndrome
  • Other childhood disintegrative disorder
  • Disorder with hyperkinesia associated with mental retardation and stereotyped movements
  • Asperger’s syndrome
  • Other pervasive developmental disorders
  • Unspecified pervasive developmental disorders

The approaches to pervasive developmental disorders are varied and rely on individual actions carried out by professionals trained in a specific area or composed of multidisciplinary care.

The procedures include the Applied Behavior Analysis Model (ABA), the Denver Early Intervention Model (DENVER or ESDM), Sensory Integration, Alternative and Supplementary Communication or Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), among others.

The choice of the most appropriate method must be made by the team of assistant health professionals with the patient’s family.

According to the ANS, health plan operators will not be able to deny care to people with conditions such as cerebral palsy and Down Syndrome who have a global developmental disorder.

In a note, the Brazilian Association of Health Plans (Abramge) reported that it will evaluate the content of the ANS decision and that “it understands the importance of the initiative to clarify that the treatments of global development disorders will not be impacted”.

“The regulatory body opens an important dialogue channel with the representations of health professionals, operators and society, especially parents and patients, seeking to ensure that the coverage of these therapies is resolute and balanced, based on technical criteria for Health Technology Assessment ( ATS)”, completes the note.
