Answer of K. Sakellaropoulou in Turkey: He has never recognized the jurisdiction of the Hague Tribunal

The President of the Republic gave a resounding response to Ankara and to the continuing violation of international law and the rule of law from the podium of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

Turkey has never accepted the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice in The Hague, said Katerina Sakellaropoulou in response to the attack she received from a Turkish MP inside the Temple of the Republic of Europe. And all this a few hours before the Summit that starts tomorrow in Brussels, where the Prime Minister will put the Turkish revisionism in our European partners.

The Turkish MP said that it is contradictory for Greece to ask to go to The Hague while it does not recognize the international court and spoke about demilitarization of the islands, airspace, EEZ, continental shelf, territorial waters.

The President of the Republic gave the laconic and clear answer:

“Greece has recognized the mandatory jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice in The Hague according to Article 36 of its Statute since 1994. In 2015 my country renewed its recognition with a relevant statement and adding some specific exceptions following the example of other European and non-European states. “On the contrary, we know that Turkey has not recognized the above jurisdiction of the court,” he replied.

What he answered to a Norwegian MP about immigration

What are the conditions in the Greek islands and what is your cooperation with the EU countries, the Norwegian MP asked, with Ms. Sakellaroulou answering that “We accept disproportionate flows of migrants and now they are relatively reduced.” “It is an issue that concerns us all and we must all bow down to it. Without solidarity it is not possible,” he added.

Regarding Greece, Ms. Sakellaropoulou said: “Greece’s goal was secure infrastructure, asylum services complete the procedures much faster, the unaccompanied accommodation structures are supervised and I must have visited such structures. A lot has been done but this is an ongoing claim”. For cooperation with other states, he stressed, among other things, that it is diverse. “Turkey has stopped accepting returns under the guise of a pandemic and that is not in favor of cooperating harmoniously.”
