US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said he would speak with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Saturday, adding that Washington and its allies would quickly impose tough economic sanctions if Russia invaded Ukraine, according to Reuters.
Speaking from the Fiji Islands, where he was meeting with Pacific leaders, Blinken said that if Russia was really interested in resolving the crisis in Ukraine through diplomacy, Washington was ready to play its part.
He emphasized that the crisis was to be resolved in the light of the escalation, but so far “we have seen only escalation from Moscow”, adding that the United States was “prepared” whether Russia chose the path of diplomacy or a more aggressive energy.
The US Secretary of State also said that there would be new announcements about the US Embassy in Kiev in the coming hours.
The US Secretary of State, however, said that the US does not know if the Russian president has decided to invade Ukraine and added that if Russia is really interested in resolving this crisis through diplomacy, we are ready to do so.
