Americans need to remain vigilant against the Omicron mutation despite evidence that its symptoms may be less severe because the volume of cases could flood hospitals, President Bain’s chief medical adviser said on Sunday. Fauchi, as reported by Bloomberg.
“The thing we do not want to worry about is that when you have such a large volume of new infections it can bypass a reduction in the severity of the disease,” Anthony Fauci told ABC.
“So if you have a lot, a lot, a lot more people who are less seriously ill, that can offset the positive effect of less seriousness on getting more severe symptoms,” Fauci said.
Fauci’s comments come at a time when coronavirus cases are on the rise around the world. Preliminary data from Scotland show that the Omicron strain “is associated with a two-thirds reduction in the risk of hospitalization at Covid-19 compared to Delta”.
However, new daily Omicron infections in the US have surpassed those of the delta wave, CNN reported. US airlines have canceled nearly 1,900 flights over the holiday weekend due to staff shortages linked to the outbreak.
The Biden government is focused on ensuring that “we do not overcrowd hospitals, especially in areas where there is a higher rate of unvaccinated people,” Fauci said.
