US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken arrived in the city of Rzeszow in southeastern Poland near the border with Ukraine, which has been crossed by hundreds of thousands of people since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Blinken is expected to meet with Polish officials, including Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rao. Poland is a member of the EU and NATO.
According to the US State Department, Blinken will discuss sending security aid to Poland, as well as humanitarian aid, reacting to the invasion. He will also thank Poland for welcoming refugees fleeing their homes because of the war in Ukraine.
More than one million refugees have fled Ukraine since the outbreak began on February 24. Most of the refugees are crossing Poland, according to the UN agency.
Blinken arrived in Poland from Brussels, where he met on Friday with NATO, G7 and European Union foreign ministers to discuss Western efforts to deter Russia through a program of tough sanctions.
In Poland, Blinken will meet with a cross-party congressional committee chaired by Democratic House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Gregory Miks, with the participation of high-ranking Republican Michael McCall.
NATO members are providing military assistance to Ukrainian government forces in their fight against Russian military forces, with most of that aid going through Poland.
The alliance has refused to comply with Ukraine’s request for a no-fly zone over Ukrainian airspace.
