Dr. Anthony Fauci plans to retire by the end of President Joe Biden’s current term, the administration’s top infectious disease expert told CNN on Monday.
Anthony Fauci, who serves as Biden’s chief medical adviser and has served as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for decades, clarified, however, that he does not currently have a specific retirement date in mind, nor has he begun the process.
“I’ve said it for a long time,” Fauci said of his plans to leave the administration before the end of Biden’s current term, which ends in January 2025.
“By the time we get to the end of Biden’s first term, I’ll probably be retired,” Fauci said.
In an interview published by Politico today, Fauci said he doesn’t expect to stay in government until the coronavirus is gone because, he said, “I think we’re going to live with it” for years to come.
Speaking later on CNN, Fauci clarified that while his recent retirement comments were interpreted as announcing a specific timeline, he simply meant “that it’s extremely unlikely — in fact, certain — that I won’t be here beyond January of 2025.”
