Anthony Hopkins celebrates 49 years sober: “I was in big trouble”

The actor Anthony Hopkins 86, took to social media to mark his 49 years of sobriety. In a video posted on Instagram, the Hollywood veteran spoke about his decision to give up alcohol almost five decades ago and recalled the moment he decided to seek help.

“49 years ago, I stopped. I was having a lot of fun, but then I realized I was in big trouble because I couldn’t remember anything and I was driving drunk, completely out of my mind “, began the actor.

“On that decisive day, I realized I needed help. So I looked for her. I called a group of people like me: alcoholics. And that was it. I’ve been sober ever since. I’ve had more fun in these 49 years than ever before”, celebrated the actor from “The Silence of the Lambs” (1991).

The Oscar winner took the opportunity to encourage those facing addiction to seek help. “If you have a problem – having fun is wonderful, having a drink is cool – but if you are struggling with alcohol, there is support. It’s not a terrible thing; It’s a disease if you’re allergic to alcohol,” he said.

He continued: “Seek help . There is a lot of assistance available. One thing I didn’t know was that I wasn’t unique. There are thousands of people like me. Anyway, I got sober and, it may seem like a simple word, but I had a wonderful life. They still hire me, they still offer me work.”

About to celebrate his birthday, the artist recognized that his longevity was something unexpected. “I’m celebrating my long life a surprisingly long life. So if you have a problem, you know where to look for help. Call any support group, addiction program, whatever you need. Because this is something fatal. That said, Happy New Year!”
