Since Sunday, January 24, it is even already possible to make an appointment to be vaccinated against the new coronavirus, the first step in a free and “gradual” national campaign scheduled for next week.

A campaign that will start next week

Choices dictated by logistics

The kingdom expects other batches from the Chinese group SinoPharm on Wednesday, according to a statement from the Ministry of Health. This is explained by the fact that Morocco had participated in Chinese clinical trials and had placed its orders in the fall. Rabat had indicated at the end of December having ordered 65 million doses of these vaccines, the cheapest and easier to store at temperatures of 2 to 8 degrees. Choices deemed more in tune with Moroccan and more broadly African realities.

Because the pandemic is not weakening in Morocco, where nearly 2,000 new cases are on average recorded every day. The kingdom of 35 million inhabitants, where the state of health emergency was declared in mid-March, has recorded more than 465,000 cases of contamination, including 8,100 deaths, according to the latest official report. A nighttime curfew has been in effect since December 21 and for three weeks, gatherings are prohibited and restaurants, cafes, shops and supermarkets close from 8 p.m. Restaurants in Casablanca, Marrakech, Agadir and Tangier are completely closed for the period. Indeed, the pandemic primarily affects cities with high urban density, such as the economic capital Casablanca (West) and the popular city of Salé, adjacent to Rabat. As in other countries, the campaign, which had been officially announced at the beginning of November, was delayed by the delivery times of the vaccine. Local media, however, criticized a lack of communication on the subject.
