Anticipated by CNN, Jack Johnson releases songs with Brazilian singer; listen up

The Hawaiian singer Jack Johnson released, this Friday (28), two songs in partnership with the Brazilian singer and multi-instrumentalist Rogê.

The existence of these songs with a Brazilian partnership, which had never been released, was revealed by Jack in an interview with CNN in June this year.

This Thursday (27), the singer also announced that he will perform in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte, in January next year, and will feature Rogê as the opening shows.

The songs, “Sunsets For Somebody Else” and “Big Sur”, unite the meek vocals of the Hawaiian composer, who had hits on Brazilian radio in the 2000s, with Brazilian elements, such as cavaquinho and cuíca. Listen below.

This partnership was born out of a mutual friend the two artists have – the celebrated Brazilian producer, based in California, Mario Caldato Jr..

Mario produced the two songs released this Friday (27), joining elements of Jack’s penultimate album, “All The Light Above It Too” (2017), with new instrumentals and vocals recorded by Rogê.

In the June interview, Jack told CNN as he admired Rogê, a 47-year-old singer and songwriter known in the Rio scene, who has played with artists such as Arlindo Cruz, Seu Jorge, João Bosco and Marcelo D2.

Nowadays, Rogê also lives in the United States, in Los Angeles.

“The funny thing is, we haven’t seen each other in years, but we’ve met a few times. One time he came and we actually did some recording together.”

“He translated some lyrics into Portuguese, but we never found the right time to release them,” he added.

Asked how this meeting came about, Jack explained that the two met once backstage at a concert.

“He gave me a vinyl record and I brought it home. And when I finally put it on, I loved it so much,” she recalls.

The album was “Na Veia”, released by Rogê in 2015 in partnership with sambista Arlindo Cruz.

“We kept in touch, and I sent him some songs. He translated and sang a few verses. We made some versions with Mario [Caldato Jr.] producing,” explains Jack.

“So we have them, we just never find the right time to release them. Now that I’ve said it out loud, we’re going to release it sooner rather than later,” she joked.
