Anticipating and prolonging the drought is a reality, says Minister of Integration

The Minister of Integration and Regional Development, Waldez Góes, attributed part of the reason for the recent fires located in the Pantanal and the Amazon to the anticipation and prolongation of the drought.

The statements took place this Monday, 24th, after a “situation room” meeting at Palácio do Planalto, with the ministers of the Environment, Marina Silva, and of Planning, Simone Tebet. According to him, the El Niño phenomenon, which occurred last year, will repeat itself in 2024 and will continue until next year.

“This means that the anticipation of the drought and its prolongation is a reality,” said the minister.

On the occasion, he highlighted the publication of a decree from the Ministry of Integration in May that dealt with water scarcity in the Pantanal. In June, there was an emergency decree and the installation of the “situation room”.

“We are adopting a series of measures for the Amazon, considering the drought that will happen and which will be prolonged,” he said.

Góes also stated that more than 90% of “what is burning in the Pantanal” concerns fires, even with the government’s ban on any action in this regard in 2024.

The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva, also attributed human action when dealing with fires and stated that more than 85% of fires are inside private properties.

Together with Marina and Góes, minister Simone Tebet said that the government should evaluate requests for budget credit to fight the fire on Wednesday, 26th.
