Antivirus developer McAfee found dead in jail cell

The founder of antivirus software company, John McAfee, committed suicide in a Barcelona prison, where he was detained since October 2020, awaiting extradition to the United States on tax charges. Local mass media write about it. The 75-year-old programmer was found dead a few hours after the Spanish side approved his extradition. The Catalan authorities have confirmed the fact of suicide.

In early October last year, the US Department of Justice charged McAfee with tax evasion and concealment of multimillion-dollar assets. The entrepreneur is charged with cryptocurrency fraud, registration of property on front persons and failure to submit tax returns. He faces up to 30 years in prison. Later, McAfee was put on the international wanted list and detained at the Barcelona airport, from where he planned to fly to Istanbul. Already in custody, he wrote on his Twitter that he was not going to lay hands on himself, as he was satisfied with the conditions of detention.

John McAfee was known for his eccentric behavior. In the last years of his life, he repeatedly found himself in the center of scandals – for example, he was suspected of possession of weapons, trafficking in illegal drugs and the murder of his neighbor. In 2020, he was detained at a Norwegian airport for wearing women’s panties instead of a face shield.
