In Milan, for over 10 years, there is a trans, that aims to protect, support and defend transgender people. IS handled by Ala Milano Onlus and is located in via Boifava. It was founded in 2009 Antonia Monopoli, transgender activist, writer and theater actress. Antonia, born in Bisceglie and arrived in Milan in the early 90s, after a very difficult transition. “My personal story resembles, to a certain extent, that of all the people we assist”, she says, “I was born in the early 1970s in an Apulian province from which I was forced to leave, as a teenager, because of social prejudice and cultural inadequacy with which gender and transition issues were dealt with.
Arrived in Milan, I soon met on my own skin the experience of the road. For this reason our educational proposal is peer: my role is recognized and accepted more easily because I am perceived by those who contact the helpdesk as similar to them in terms of condition and experience ».
So for over 10 years, Antonia deals with peer education: “We provide reception, guidance and accompaniment services aimed at a target of transgender people and their affections, as well as harm reduction and HIV and STD prevention in the field of prostitution and social inclusion and cohesion, even in prison”.
The branch had stopped its activities in the summer of 2019, when it became more difficult to raise funds. It then returned to operation in December of the same year, offering support even in the most difficult period of the pandemic: “I wanted to give to others what I lacked ».
