“Anvisa attested and childhood vaccine is safe”, says Minister of Health

Brazil received this Thursday (13) the first shipment of vaccines from Pfizer against Covid-19 for children aged 5 to 11 years. The Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, spoke at a press conference – after the arrival of the immunizers – about the safety and effectiveness of vaccination against Covid-19 in children.

“Despite recent, these vaccines have been applied in major health systems, application began in November, more than 8 million have been applied in the US, and children aged 5 to 11 years have not been reported of major adverse events,” he said. Queiroga.

“Therefore, as far as we know at the moment, there is safety attested not only by Anvisa, but by other regulatory agencies for the application of these vaccines, and they are here in Brazil”, he added.

In the batch that arrived this Thursday, there are 1.2 million vaccines that will be destined for the Brazilian government for distribution to states and municipalities, following the population criterion.

According to the Ministry of Health, by the end of March this year, Brazil will have 20 million doses of Pfizer’s childhood vaccine.

“We appreciate Pfizer’s punctuality. By the end of March, we will have 20 million doses of childhood vaccine. This vaccine can be applied to the children of parents who so wish, in our vaccination rooms, meeting the criteria established by Anvisa”, said the minister.

Queiroga highlighted that possible adverse events will be monitored by the folder, as well as by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa).

“Of course, in all campaigns there are adverse events, but we will keep an eye on Anvisa and the pharmaceutical industry, to make possible course corrections”, he said.

Distribution of childhood vaccines

In all, Brazil should receive 4.3 million doses in January. For February, the expectation is that Pfizer will deliver another 7.2 million doses and, in March, another 8.4 million immunizers. The vaccination schedule for children consists of two doses with an interval of eight weeks.
