The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) approved, this Wednesday (27), the permission to extend the validity period of 12 months to batches of Pfizer vaccine against Covid-19 already imported and distributed by the Ministry of Health.
The decision was unanimously made by Anvisa’s collegiate board and applies to doses of vaccines for adults and pediatric use, regardless of the expiration date printed on the vaccine package.
According to Anvisa, the exceptional authorization is based on the approval of the petition to extend the validity period already approved by the Agency’s Biological Products Management. The opinions issued by the internal sanitary registration and inspection areas were considered.
According to Anvisa, the measures indicated by the pharmaceutical allow the maintenance of traceability and identification regarding the expiration date of the batches already distributed of the vaccine.
The approval also allows Pfizer to continue to import batches of the vaccine that have an expiration date of less than 12 months printed on the packaging and apply the expiration date of 12 months approved by Anvisa. According to Anvisa, the approval will accelerate the supply of vaccines to the Brazilian population.
Pfizer must keep batch and expiry information up to date with the Ministry of Health, professionals involved in the application of vaccines and citizens.
