Anvisa bars two batches of ingredient that may have poisoned dogs

The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) prohibited the commercialization, distribution, handling and use of two batches of the ingredient propylene glycol of the brand Tecno Clean Industrial Ltda. The measure, published this Monday (12), also determined the collection of batches AD5035C22 and AD4055C21 of the substance.

The lots were preliminarily analyzed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply and contamination by ethylene glycol, an extremely toxic chemical compound when ingested, was detected.

During the investigation of the deaths of several dogs, the occurrences were associated with the consumption of dog treats made with propylene glycol with evidence of contamination by ethylene glycol.

Upon identifying the possibility of distributing the contaminated ingredient to food factories for human use, the ministry alerted Anvisa so that the agency could adopt actions related to products subject to Sanitary Surveillance.

Therefore, Anvisa decided to publish a preventive measure, prohibiting and also determining the collection of the two batches of the product contaminated with ethylene glycol, to prevent them from being used in the manufacture of food.
