Anvisa decides this Thursday (20) on the application of CoronaVac in children

This Thursday (20), from 10 am, the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) analyzes the request for emergency use of the CoronaVac vaccine against Covid-19 in children and adolescents from 3 to 17 years of age.

The request was made by the Butantan Institute at the end of last year. This is the second request made by the Institute, the first of which was denied due to lack of documentation.

In a press conference held by the government of São Paulo this Wednesday (19), Governor João Doria (PSDB) said that Butantan has 15 million doses of CoronaVac ready for use. Of these, 12 million are reserved for children aged 3 to 11 years.

“Having the approval of Anvisa, São Paulo begins to immediately vaccinate children in this age group”, said Doria.

According to the coordinator of the State Immunization Program, Regiane de Paula, the state already has the entire logistical scheme ready to distribute the vaccine immediately to all 645 municipalities in São Paulo.

Anvisa met with Butantan a week ago to discuss the use of CoronaVac in children and adolescents and reported that the evaluation process was in the final stage. The Agency also discussed the application of the immunizer with technicians from Sinovac and specialists from different health agencies in Brazil.

In an interview with CNN this Monday (17), Dimas Covas, president of the Institute, said that “Coronavac is safe and necessary for children”.

“We offer Anvisa a relevant set of data on Coronavac, a dossier on the use and safety of the vaccine in China, with more than 211 million children and adolescents vaccinated,” said Covas.
