The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) presented new proposals for images and health warning messages that could be on the back of smoking product packaging and on displays displayed at points of sale.
These proposals will be debated at a public hearing scheduled for this Friday (18), from 9 am to 1 pm, in the agency’s auditorium in Brasília.
According to Anvisa, health warnings need to be updated regularly to inform the public about the main health risks associated with the consumption of tobacco derivatives, in addition to highlighting the harmful substances present in these products.
The hearing will be open to the public, with no prior registration required. The auditorium has capacity for 240 people, with entry on a first-come, first-served basis.
On Wednesday (9), Anvisa’s Board of Directors approved the public hearing.
According to the agency, the objective of the proposal is to modernize the design and organization of elements in smoking product packaging. To this end, Anvisa carried out a study evaluating current warnings and created a technical group to develop the new set of alerts.
“It is important to highlight that these health warnings consist of one of the most effective health communication campaigns ever developed in the country, having significantly contributed to the public health policy to combat smoking,” Anvisa stated in a note.
