Anxiety for 77 missing from shipwreck in India, 33 dead

Investigations are under way in Mumbai, India, for 77 missing people after a ship sank during Cyclone Tokte in the west of the country, leaving at least 33 dead.

The ship carried 261 workers from the Bombay High oil well off Mumbai, home to India’s largest offshore oil rigs, and sank partly on Monday.

A total of 184 people have been rescued from the P305 ship in extremely difficult conditions, the Navy said on Twitter. Rescue operations continue with three ships and an aircraft still searching for survivors.

Navy helicopters managed to rescue 137 people aboard another ship in the area, as reported by AMPE.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to fly over areas hit by the cyclone in his hometown of Gujarat.

THE cyclone Tokteh, which forced more than 200,000 people to flee their homes, hit Gujarat on Monday. with gusts of wind reaching 185 kilometers per hour, according to the Indian Meteorological Service.

Seven young people were killed, bringing the total to 33. Most were killed when walls or houses collapsed, according to Gujarat’s government leader Vijay Rupani. Among the victims were a child who was crushed by a collapsed wall, a teenage girl who was killed when a roof fell on her and an 80-year-old woman who was killed by a falling electricity pole.

In Gujarat, more than 16,500 houses were damaged, 40,000 trees were uprooted and nearly 6,000 villages were left without electricity. At the same time, there were disasters in the crops of the area.

The tropical storm, the strongest to hit the region in decades, has claimed victims in Kerala, Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat.

The cyclone also raised the pressure on the Indian authorities at a time when they are facing a rapid rise in cases and deaths due to covid-19, as well as with oxygen shortages and hospital beds.

THE India, with 1.3 billion inhabitants, recorded the previous 24 hours a record 4,529 deaths from covid-19 and 267,334 new cases, bringing the total death toll to 283,248 and infections to 25.5 million.

Gujarat, which has officially recorded 9,000 deaths due to it coronavirussuspended the vaccination campaign for two days, while Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra, did the same for one day.

According to experts, more and more strong cyclones are observed in the Arabian Sea than in the past due to climate change.

“The Arabian Sea is one of the fastest warming basins in the oceans worldwide,” said Roxy Matthew Cole of the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology.
