Appeal from the Prime Minister of Australia for the release of Julian Assange: “Enough is enough”

Immediately release the founder of WikiLeaks, Mr Julian Assange asks the Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, underlining that “there is no benefit in remaining in prison».

Julian Assange, an Australian citizen, is being held in prison London’s top-security Belmars after British police arrested him by forcing him out of the Ecuadorian embassy in the UK capital four years ago.

Its founder WikiLeaks continues his marathon legal battle to avoid extradition to the US.

US authorities charge Julian Assange, 51, with ‘conspiracy’ along with Chelsea Manning, a former US military analyst, who aimed to declassify tens of thousands of confidential and classified US diplomatic and military documents in 2010, mainly on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“The Assange case must be seen in the light of what happened”

For Anthony Albanese, the extended one imprisonment of Julian Assange is “disappointing”.

“I think Assange’s case has to be looked at in the light of what happened, what the charges are, whether and to what extent the time (of imprisonment) he has already served practically exceeds the time (of the sentence) that would be justified to be imposed on him if the charges against him were proven to be true,” the head of the Australian government told the ABC television network.

“But when in Australia we see (…) that the person who gave the documents (Chelsea Manning) is free, after serving some time in prison, we conclude that here we have a different treatment” he pointed out as reported by the Athens News Agency.

The prime minister of Australia added that although he personally believes there were “issues” with Mr. Assange’s activity, “enough is enough”: “There is no benefit to his continued imprisonment.”

Julian Assange took refuge in the Ecuadorian embassy in April 2019; he remained stranded there for seven years to avoid arrest by British authorities, who had issued a warrant against him on sexual assault charges in Sweden, which were later entered the file. He denied the accusations, which he saw as nothing more than a pretext for his extradition to Sweden and from there to the US in order to be tried for “espionage”.

His arrest by the British police came after the then government of Ecuador revoked the political asylum it had previously granted him.
