Applause to the opponents: Mourinho’s gesture in the Dinamo Zagreb locker room

At the end of the game, in any sport, they should never be missing. Often, however, they are in hiding. They are the applause to the opponents, however the game is over. He was an exception Jose Mourinho, after a defeat. His Tottenham left the Europa League. He was eliminated by Dinamo Zagreb, who won by 3 to 0, thanks to a hat-trick from Orsic, in extra time in the second leg of the round of 16.

At the end of the match the coach of Tottenham Mourinho entered the Dinamo locker room to applaud the opponents.

The video ended up on social media immediately.

The sportiness of the Special One was emphasized, but someone, knowing its strong character, also said that the applause could be a sign for its players and a way to avoid talking about something else. The fact is that the Portuguese coach applauded the opponents who in turn thanked him by clapping his hands. The Setubal coach also apologized to the fans of his club for the team’s performance in Zagreb: “I don’t want to say more, I can only apologize to the Tottenham fans and I hope the boys feel like me”.

A few years ago it was proposed that at the end of the games there were greetings and handshakes in midfield. It rarely happens. Among the many proposals also that of applause to the opponents at the end of the game. In 2007 it seemed to be institutionalized: mandatory on all Italian football fields for the home team applaud opposing players when they leave the field at the end of the game. It hasn’t caught on, it hasn’t become that third half of rugby where teams get together after the game.

There is applause to the opponent, but more often after a great play than at the end of the matches. It happened to Cristiano Ronaldo when he was still playing for Real Madrid and met his future Juventus fans. There was a standing ovation at the overhead goal. The whole Juventus stadium stood up to applaud in the rain because they saw the best that football can offer. It was an applause to the champion, to the gesture, even if by the opponent, but we remember it because it is exceptional, when it should be normal.
