Apple announced on Monday that it will more deeply integrate its software into the dashboards of cars that will be marketed from next year.
The company unveiled an updated version of Car Play at its annual software developer conference. The new software will, for the first time, feed into a car’s instrument panel, showing speed, directions and fuel consumption. Apple said automakers like Ford plan to use the new software and that cars with it will go on sale next year.
Apple also announced a buy now, pay later model. Apple Pay Later will be available where Apple Pay is accepted and managed through Apple Wallet. Users can make four equal payments without interest or fees.
Apple even added an edit button to iMessage for outgoing messages.
Among other announcements, the company introduced tweaks to popular apps, including better rendering of landmarks in its Maps software, live sports scores on Apple TV, and making shared video preview in-app messages.
The tech giant is also adding a tool called “Safety Check” to disable access to sensitive information for people in situations of abuse.
Meanwhile, analysts and developers are eagerly awaiting any hints on how a future mixed reality headset from the company might work.
While a headset announcement is unlikely on Monday, developers hope the future product will likely use cameras to pass a view of the outside world on a high-resolution screen that can overlay digital objects onto physical environments and could arrive in March next year. year, said Anshel Sag, principal analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy.
Such a product would be Apple’s first entry into a new category of computing device since the Apple Watch was launched in 2015, and would put the company in direct competition with Meta, which has unveiled plans for a mixed-reality headset code called “Cambria”, to be released this year.
But neither Sag nor other developers and analysts interviewed by Reuters are expecting a preview of the headset on Monday.
