Apple AirTag beacons in Russia and a number of other countries will work in a limited mode

Apple recently introduced AirTags, which have been rumored on the web for months. They will be sold in many markets, but in a number of countries these beacons will operate in a limited mode.

The bottom line is that AirTag relies on two technologies to operate: Bluetooth and UWB (ultra-wideband). And if with the first there are no problems anywhere, then with the second it is not so simple. In some countries, the frequencies allocated for this technology are blocked for one reason or another. More precisely, we are talking about frequencies of 6.24 and 8.24 GHz.

Accordingly, in these countries, UWB technology does not work in Apple smartphones, which means that it cannot be used for AirTag operation. Unfortunately, the list of countries also includes Russia. In general, it looks like this:

  • Argentina
  • Armenia
  • Azerbaijan
  • Belarus
  • Indonesia
  • Kazakhstan
  • Kyrgyzstan
  • Nepal
  • Pakistan
  • Paraguay
  • Russia
  • Solomon islands
  • Tajikistan
  • Turkmenistan
  • Ukraine
  • Uzbekistan

In these countries, Apple beacons will only work with Bluetooth, which somewhat limits the capabilities of new products, although not critical for many.
