Apple and cars in priority: plans of the largest chipmaker TSMC due to silicon shortage

Due to the worldwide shortage of silicon, the largest semiconductor manufacturer TSMC plans to prioritize the orders of its partner companies in the third quarter of 2021. Among the most important customers will be Apple and the car manufacturers. This was reported by the 9To5Mac portal with reference to the authoritative foreign edition DigiTimes, which has sources in the production.

The silicon shortage has affected the production of various electronics around the world, but the most affected industry has been automobiles. American car manufacturers have repeatedly pushed the US authorities to oblige chip makers to allocate production facilities exclusively for the needs of automakers, but no formal bill was signed.

The DigiTimes report indicated that TSMC is currently most attracted to the production of chipsets for Apple, followed by orders from computer and server manufacturers. This is not surprising since Apple is one of the largest customers for the Taiwanese corporation. Moreover, TSMC is the exclusive manufacturer of SoCs A (iPhone, iPad and some other gadgets) and M (new Mac computers and new iPad Pro).
