Apple blocks app update that uses ChatGPT

Apple has delayed approving an update to BlueMail, an email app with artificial intelligence (AI)-based language tools, due to concerns it could generate inappropriate content for children, according to Ben Volach, co-founder of developer BlueMail Blix and with documents seen by The Wall Street Journal. The software developer disagrees with the decision.

BlueMail’s new AI feature uses OpenAI’s latest ChatGPT chatbot to help automate email writing using past email content and calendar events. ChatGPT allows users to converse with an AI in seemingly human-like ways and is capable of advanced writing on a variety of topics.

“Your app includes AI-generated content, but does not appear to include content filtering at this time,” Apple’s app review team said last week in a developer message reviewed by WSJ.

The app’s review team said that because the app may produce content that isn’t appropriate for all audiences, BlueMail should either raise its age restriction to 17 or older or include content filtering, the documents show.

App restriction is currently set for users age 4 and older. Volach says that this request is unfair and that other apps with similar AI functions without age restrictions are already allowed for Apple users.

An Apple spokesperson said developers can challenge a rejection through the App Review Board’s appeal process and that it is investigating the developer’s complaint.
