Apple has struck a deal with Chinese display maker BOE, sources said. The contract covers 25% of the OLED displays intended for the standard version of the iPhone 14 smartphone. BOE will only provide 6.1-inch panels, which means the larger iPhone 14 Max, as well as a couple of iPhone Pro smartphones, will continue to use exclusively screens produced by LG and Samsung.
Chinese media sources note that BOE will supply panels for the current generation iPhone for the first time. The display maker is currently producing panels for the previous generation iPhone.
This information comes just a few weeks after reports from South Korea that BOE is also preparing to supply OLED panels for future iPads and Macbooks. To meet Apple’s future contract requirements, BOE will expand its B16 plant in Sichuan province and equip it with adequate capacity to produce the required number of OLED panels.
The source also recalled that BOE had the best year since he started working on such panels. Annual results showed that BOE shipped nearly 60 million OLEDs, up 60%, propelling the company to first place in China and second in the world behind undisputed leader Samsung.
Sources today revealed that the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro will be available in a new purple hue.
