Apple introduces more expensive entry-level iPhone, new iPad Air, powerful chip and more

Apple announced new iPhones, iPads and more at an event called “Peek Performance” this Tuesday (8).

The main attraction of the event was the new version of the iPhone SE, the simplest version of Apple’s smartphones, which now has a new camera system, A15 processor (the same as the iPhone 13) and 5G support. Apple also promised more battery life, but did not release the details of it.

This is the third generation of the iPhone SE – the previous ones were released in 2016 and 2020.

According to Apple, the iPhone SE is 1.8 times faster than the iPhone 8 or twice as fast as the iPhone 7.

It comes with a 4.7″ Retina HD display, with bezels at the top and bottom. It comes with three color options: Midnight (black), Starlight (white) and Product Red (red, with part of the money donated to health initiatives)

Another novelty in the SE Ceramic Shield model, a coating that protects the screen and the back of the smartphone from drops and impacts and which had already been presented on the iPhone 13.

In the US, it will start at US$429 (US$30 more than the previous version) and will go on sale from March 18th. The smartphone will have 64GB, 128GB and 256GB versions.

Date and price for Brazil have not yet been announced.

New iPad Air

Another novelty in terms of hardware were the new iPad Air – with a design similar to the last version presented a year and a half ago.

The new iPad Air has the M1 processor, which was first introduced in Apple Macs. Other novelties include 5G support and a USB-C port that promises data transfer at a speed of 10 Gbps.

The new processor promises 60% more performance than the A14 Bionic version, which was in the previous version of the iPad Air. The GPU has eight cores and promises twice as much graphics power as the previous version.

The cameras also got an update. The front now has 12 megapixels (the previous one had 7 megapixels). It also features Center Stage, first introduced on the iPad Pro and Mini 6, which centers the camera on the person during a call — even if they move.

The rear camera still has a resolution of 12 megapixels, but now includes a True Tone flash with four LEDs.

The screen is 10.9″ and has a peak brightness of 500 nits, as well as HDR support.

It is being sold for prices starting at US$ 599 in the WiFi version with 64 GB.

Date and price for Brazil have not yet been announced.

New Mac Studio

Apple also introduced a new version of its desktop, Mac Studio. It looks like the Mac Mini, but is more powerful thanks to the new M1 Max and M1 Ultra processors — the latter also announced today.

According to Apple, the product has 7.7″ by 3×7″, four Thunderbolt 4 inputs and 10Gb Ethernet input, in addition to two USB-A ports, an HDMI input and an audio input. On the front there are two more USB-C ports and an SD card slot. It supports four Pro Display XDRs and a 4K TV at the same time.

Apple promises that the Mac Studio with M1 Max. new delivers 50% faster CPU performance than the Mac Pro or 2.5 times faster than the 27″ iMac with Core i9. The M1 Ultra version promises to be 3.8 times more powerful than the iMac or 90% more than the Mac Pro.

Mac Studio even comes with options of up to 127GB of unified memory and up to 8TB of SSD for storage.

The Mac Studio with M1 Max starts at $1,999 and the M1 Ultra starts at $3,999. There are no prices for Brazil yet.

M1 Ultra Processor

Finally, Apple also presented the M1 Ultra, its new most powerful processing system. It basically has twice the performance of the M1 Max or eight times the performance of a regular M1, with 20 CPU cores, 64 GPU cores and 32 cores for intelligence processing, plus 128GB of Ram.

According to Apple, it offers the same performance as a 16-core computer, but using 100w less power.
