Apple iPhone SE 2022 is the world’s first low-carbon aluminum smartphone

The first phone made from low-carbon aluminum is the new Apple iPhone SE 2022, the company announced in a press release. The smartphone is being produced as part of the Green Bonds investment initiative, on which $4.7 billion has been spent.

The move is logical as it is the cheapest 5G iPhone to sell in the millions, so Apple has tried to make it as green as possible. The aluminum for its frame is produced by the Elysis carbon-free smelting technology used at the Center for Industrial Research and Development in Quebec using hydroelectric power.

A new aluminum smelting process, Elysis, can produce batches of refined primary aluminum by releasing oxygen into the air instead of greenhouse gases.

This is the first time that aluminum has been produced at this commercial purity, without any greenhouse gas emissions and on an industrial scale. The sale to Apple confirms market interest in aluminum produced using our advanced Elysis carbon-free smelting technology. Today’s announcement proves that Elysis, a joint venture between Alcoa and Rio Tinto, has been able to bring the idea to life. We are thrilled to be working with Apple on this milestone that could lead to long-term change in aluminum production.
