Apple MacBook Pro (2017) also suffers from known Retina display defect

The 2017 Apple MacBook Pro laptops were affected by a display defect previously seen in 2016 models. It is known as Stage Light or Flexgate. The essence of the defect is the appearance of an abnormal strip at the bottom of the screen.

This bar is darker than the rest of the screen. It seems subtle right after turning it on, but as the laptop heats up during operation, the strip gets wider and darker. The bar distorts the image at the bottom of the screen. The source suggests that the source of the problem is a small printed circuit board located near the base of the LCD panel that provides a connection to the system board. If the components or contacts on it become hot, the backlight LEDs or display controller will not function properly.

A check on the Apple and iFixit community forums showed that the defect began to appear in May last year and is massive. Interestingly, both the 2016 and 2017 13-inch MacBook Pros share the same base model number A1706, suggesting that Apple has not addressed the cause of the defect. The difference is that 2016 laptops are covered by a free repair program that Apple adopted under pressure from consumers who filed class action lawsuits, while 2017 laptops were not. At least for now.
