Apple may end Android smartphone bullying: Google thinks it just needs to adopt the RCS standard

Hiroshi Lockheimer, Google’s vice president of Android, Chrome OS, Play, Photos, and Chrome, has sharply criticized Apple for its iMessage policies. He accuses the company of using iMessage to sell more iPhones. He also linked this strategy to encouraging bullying and pressure on teenagers with Android smartphones. Young people with Android smartphones in the US and other countries around the world feel alienated from their iPhone peers, he said.

He cites a 2016 email from Apple’s Phil Schiller that flared up during a legal battle with Epic. In the letter, the Apple CEO stated that “bringing iMessage to Android will hurt us more than it will help us.”

A similar comment was made by Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software development at Apple: “iMessage on Android will simply remove the barrier for iPhone families giving their kids Android phones.”

Apple may end Android smartphone bullying: Google thinks it just needs to adopt the RCS standard

Hiroshi Lockheimer continues to criticize Apple for its refusal to adopt the RCS or Rich Communication Services standard, which aims to modernize SMS with features familiar to all other messengers, such as input indicators, read receipts, high-quality photos and more.

Hiroshi Lockheimer is confident that if Apple adds iMessage support to Android, it will reduce the pressure on teens. According to the authoritative publication WSJ, today iMessage has become a must-have tool for teens in the United States, which leads to bullying if it is not used.
