THE Apple will use organic light-emitting diode screens (Oled in the English acronym) in all iPhone models sold from 2025 onwards completely abandoning liquid crystal displays (LCD), Japanese newspaper Nikkei reported on Tuesday (3), citing unidentified sources.
The company is adopting OLED displays over LCDs due to the former’s ability to provide more vivid colors and sharper contrast, ideal for high-definition videos.
The planned move will exclude Japan’s Sharp Corp and Japan Display from the company’s mobile phone production chain. Applesaid Nikkei.
THE Apple has started taking orders for OLED displays for the next iPhone SE model, ordering from China’s BOE Technology and South Korea’s LG Display, the newspaper reported.
Sharp and Japan Display had a combined 70 percent share of iPhone displays about a decade ago, but have only supplied LCDs for the iPhone SE recently and do not mass produce OLED displays for smartphones, the report added.
THE Apple first used OLED screens in the iPhone X, launched in 2017, and has since started using OLEDs in premium iPhone models.
The company brought OLED displays to the latest-generation iPad Pro models launched in May.
Sharp, Japan Display and LG Display declined to comment in response to questions from Reuters. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
