Apple now lets developers charge up to $10,000 per app

If you were worried about how much money you could spend on apps before, buckle up.

Apple said on Tuesday that it is adding 700 new price points for apps to the App Store, starting at $0.29 and working up to $10,000. BRL 52,300), although the highest amount is available “on request” only by developers.

The changes follow a $100 million (R$523 million) deal with developers in August 2021 in which the company committed to expanding the prices developers can offer consumers, among other changes.

At the time, Apple declared that it “will help make the App Store an even better business opportunity for developers.”

It also comes as Apple faced an investigation into the restrictions and fees it imposes on developers, including the 30% commission the company receives from some of the apps listed in its app store.

Apple last year made it easier for some media companies to avoid the fees, but the company continues to face criticism from Elon Musk, Fortnite maker Epic and others for the necessary cut.

In addition to the new pricing, Apple has revealed that it is rolling out new tools aimed at making it easier for developers to set prices based on country or region, manage exchange rate changes, and more.

The new pricing enhancements will be available for apps that offer auto-renewing subscriptions starting Tuesday, and for other apps and in-app purchases next spring.

In total, there are now 900 different prices for apps on Apple’s App Store. New price points available include every $0.10 mark from the minimum up to $10 (R$52.36), and every $0.50 (R$2.62) between $10 and US$ 50 (BRL 261.81).

While seeing a $10,000 price tag next to an app might come as a shock, the App Store is no stranger to expensive apps. Some apps, like the Cyber Tuner piano tuning app, are currently priced at $99.9999.99.
