The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has not been able to stop the growth of the wireless headphone market. In 2021, global sales of TWS earbuds are up by almost a quarter compared to 2020, according to a new report from Counterpoint Research.
According to analysts from Counterpoint Research, sales of wireless headphones for the 12 months of last year amounted to 299.6 million units. This is about 24% more than in 2020. The growth of the segment was stimulated by the appearance on the market of new affordable models with chips like active noise cancellation and high autonomy.
Apple remains the market leader in wireless headphones, but its share is rapidly declining. Sales of all AirPods models grew just 5% year-on-year, causing Apple’s market share to fall about 4 percentage points to 25.6%. The second most popular manufacturer of wireless headphones in the world remains the Chinese company Xiaomi, which was able to maintain its market share at 9%. Rounding out the top three is South Korean Samsung, which posted a 33% year-on-year growth in wireless headphone sales and increased its share from 6.7% in 2020 to 7.2% in 2021. Samsung owes its growth to the successful debut of the Galaxy Buds Pro and Galaxy Buds 2.
Interestingly, if we consider the price segment from $50 to $100, then it is not Apple that is in the lead, but Xiaomi and JBL. And competition in the budget class, according to analysts, is only intensifying. At the same time, in the segment above $200, Apple accounts for 75% of all sales.

All regions, with the exception of North America, showed an increase in sales of wireless headphones. Most of the sales (29%) came from the countries of the Asia-Pacific region, with the exception of China. At the same time, in emerging markets, such as India, mainly inexpensive models under $50 are in high demand.
Analysts have come to the conclusion that users will only benefit from increased competition in the wireless headphone market, because it forces manufacturers to produce better and more functional models at more affordable prices.
