Until now, Apple Pay has been exclusive to the proprietary Safari browser, but with the release of iOS 16, this payment service will work in other web browsers. This is reported by the author of the foreign publication MacRumors Steve Moser (Steve Moser), who discovered a working Apple Pay in Edge and Chrome in the latest beta version of iOS 16.
Earlier on the Reddit forums, information appeared that Apple Pay also worked in Firefox after installing iOS 16 Beta 4. Apparently, support for this payment system will become available in all browsers for iOS / iPadOS.
But the implementation in web browsers for macOS is in question – now third-party programs still do not support Apple Pay, even in the latest beta version of the system. Steve Moser suggests that developers of other desktop browsers will have to update the rendering engine themselves. In the case of iOS, this was not required because web browsers for the mobile platform run on the Safari engine.
As The Verge suggests, Apple could have made this innovation because of the EU’s plans to combat the anti-competitive practices of IT giants. The corresponding law on digital markets will come into force in the spring of 2023 and will also be directed against companies that force application developers to use only a proprietary rendering engine.
