Apple Regains Second Position in Smartphone Shipping Rankings

Just as expected, Samsung was still known as the leading smartphone brand due to the number of phones it shipped, reported by Counterpart research and Canalys. Smartphone brands such as Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi, the three Chinese tech companies that do not conventionally sell their phones in Canada, were on the next three spots.

In 2019, it was informed by the same research analyst that Huawei overtook Apple and was ranked on the 2nd position. The US trade transactions have been hitting Huawei hard since then.

According to Counterpoint, in 2020, the Chinese brand smartphone shipments were 21% lower compared to 2019. It was also informed that in the fourth quarter of the year, Huawei fell out of the top five absolutely. It’s the first time Huawei has not been in the top five in six years, reports Canalys. Although Huawei was still able to hold on to the number three position overall, Xiaomi took the opportunity to grow internationally thanks to domestic sales in China (where it officially shipped 70 percent of its phones in 2019), and saw shipments rise by 17 percent in 2020 compared to 2019. The fastest-growing brand of smartphones in 2020, was officially Realme, which delivered 65% more phones than in 2019.

According to Counterpoint Research and Canalys, Apple’s gains were more modest, which rose by 3 or 5 percent year over year. The above states that in the fourth quarter of 2020, Apple shipped the most iPhones ever. Although, Apple is still known as the bestselling smartphone worldwide and Apple retakes second place in smartphone shipment rankings as sanctions bite Huawei.

The two studies stated that the mobile company of Samsung is losing its market share due manufacturers such as Xiaomi which are becoming more popular and claimed that their shipments in 2020 have dropped by 14 percent compared to 2019. There is still about 50 million smartphones ahead of Apple in second position, but the distance seemed to be narrowing.  Counterpoint reported that the South Korean electronics giant came across strong competition in the high end of the market from Apple and in the medium range from Chinese manufacturers.

Mate 30 Pro is said to be the most recently launched Huawei smartphone in Canada is the Mate 30 Pro. However, the smartphone does not have access to the Google Play Store and features the restricted AppGallery app store of Huawei instead.

Overall, relative to 2019, the entire smartphone industry has currently been down. Canalys estimated that shipments have fallen 7%, while Counterpoint reported a greater decrease of 10%. Counterpoint blames the decline on the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, but states that in the second half of the year exports started to pick up.
