Yesterday security expert Matthew Green announced Apple’s intention to scan photos for child abuse. Today, the company launched a website that talks about new child protection features, currently only available in the United States.
IOS 15, iPadOS 15 and macOS 12 will introduce machine learning that will scan photos in iMessage for nudity locally on the device. Intimate photos will be hidden for preview in the chat; when you try to open them, the system will persistently offer to refuse viewing. If the device is connected to parental controls, parents will receive a notification when these photos have been opened.
Apple will also fight the distribution of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM). For this, images will be compared with hashes of materials provided by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) before uploading to iCloud Photos. A “voucher” is created for each image, which contains the result of the match and “additional encrypted data about the image”.
“Vouchers” cannot be interpreted by Apple if the iCloud Photos account does not exceed the CSAM content threshold. If the threshold is exceeded, the technology will allow Apple to interpret the contents of the “vouchers.” The company manually reviews each report and, if it confirms compliance, disconnects the account, sends the report to NCMEC. If the user believes that his account was disabled by mistake, he can appeal to restore his account.
Apple guarantees fewer than one trillion mis-tagged account per year. More information about the technology can be found in the PDF file in English.

Siri will tell you where you can go about child sexual abuse material. And when you try to find them, Siri and Spotlight will interfere with this, explain that interest in this topic is harmful and problematic, and provide resources for getting help.

Apple is known for its negative attitude towards pornography. For example, games containing intimate scenes and applications for viewing pornographic content are prohibited in the App Store. In response to objections about this, Steve Jobs suggested using Android.
