Until the iPhone 14 series, Apple smartphones were equipped with only one light sensor located on the front. However, all new items received an additional sensor installed at the back – this was noticed by the first owners. It is noteworthy that such an idea was not invented by Apple at all, but, it seems, by Xiaomi.
Since Apple has not announced the use of two light sensors, their exact purpose is unknown. But users note that the rear sensor helps the camera set the correct shutter speed when shooting in the dark. In addition, it apparently improves the work of automatic display brightness adjustment: at least in the same conditions, the iPhone 14 Pro adapts to darkness faster than its predecessor.
Among mass smartphones, two light sensors appeared at once in Mi 10 from Xiaomi in 2020. It is worth noting that since then this implementation has not become exclusive to flagships – for example, a dual sensor system is also used in the mid-range Redmi Note 11E Pro.
