Apple to be fined for violating antitrust laws and abuse of position in Russia

Russia’s competition authority said on Tuesday it would fine Apple for violating the country’s antitrust laws and abusing its dominant position in the app store market.

The Federal Antitrust Service (FAS) said it will impose a turnover fine against Apple, the amount of which will be determined during an administrative investigation.

“The company abused its dominant position in the iOS application distribution market,” the agency said in a statement.

“Apple prohibits iOS app developers from informing customers within the app about the possibility of paying for purchases outside the App Store or using alternative payment methods.”

Apple did not comment on the matter.

Moscow has hit Western companies with a series of fines that critics say are an attempt by the Kremlin to exert more control over the digital medium.

The measures consider guidelines for storing customer data on servers located in Russia, fulfilling orders to delete content at the request of the Russian communications regulator and opening local offices in the country.

On Monday, Russia fined Google $370 million for what it says were repeated refusals to remove content.
