Apple to raise prices in app stores in the eurozone, Asia and Chile

Apple said on Tuesday that it will raise prices in its app store from next month across the eurozone and some countries in Asia, as well as Chile, South America.

The new pricing for apps and in-app purchases, excluding automatically renewable subscriptions, will take effect from October 5, Apple said in a blog post.

The company periodically adjusts its prices in different regions and had reduced prices for eurozone countries last year for monetary and tax adjustments. At the time, the initial prices of many apps dropped to 0.99 euro from 1.09 euro.

The price increase announced this Tuesday raises the initial values to 1.19 euros.

A rapid rise in inflation, interest rates and energy prices hit the yen, the euro and most emerging market currencies in 2022.

In addition to the eurozone countries, price increases will hit Sweden and Poland in Europe; Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, South Korea and Vietnam in Asia; and Chile, in South America.

For some countries like Vietnam, the increase was due to new regulations related to collecting taxes from consumers, Apple said.

The company, which launched its latest generation of iPhones earlier this month, has been building its services business to reduce reliance on its flagship smartphones.

Revenue from Apple’s services unit, which includes its app store, has been growing rapidly in recent years and now hovers around $20 billion a quarter.
