Apple Uses Hybrid Fresnel Lens To Reduce Weight Of Its Headset Below 150g

Apple plans to use a hybrid Fresnel lens for its mixed reality headset, which will improve optical performance, provide a wide field of view and keep the weight of the headset below 150 grams, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Kuo notes that most virtual reality headsets use Fresnel lenses, but these headsets usually weigh 300-400 grams and are large. Apple’s mixed reality headset will get a thinner and lighter body. Apple is working to optimize the field of view, size and weight of the device.

The company intends to use a hybrid Fresnel lens, consisting of three stacked Fresnel lenses, to achieve a thin and light design with improved optical performance. According to Kuo, the headset uses six Fresnel lenses (three lenses for each eye). Apple will use lightweight plastic lenses with custom materials and coatings to match the optical performance of the glass.

The source adds that the lightweight lenses are mostly supplied by Young Optics and Genius Electronic Optical, but they won’t be cheap and will contribute to the headset’s high rumored $ 3,000 total price tag.

This headset is due to debut next year.
