Apple Watch may “see” the coronavirus a week before the PCR test

As it became known, the popular Apple Watch smartwatch can effectively predict coronavirus infection a week before the fact of infection can be detected using a PCR test.

In a new study, called the Warrior Watch Study, published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research, several hundred Mount Sinai healthcare providers used a dedicated Apple Watch and iPhone app to monitor health conditions. In addition, these participants also had to complete a daily survey over a period of several months to provide direct feedback on potential COVID symptoms and other health-related aspects such as stress.

The data were collected from April to September last year, with a focus on heart rate variability. It is a key indicator of nervous system tension. These findings were then combined with reported disease-related symptoms such as fever, pain, dry cough, and loss of smell and taste.

The researchers believe this will help predict infection and isolate people ahead of time to prevent further spread of the virus.
