Apple Watch will not only receive a glucometer, but will also be able to determine the content of alcohol in the blood

According to updated information, in addition to measuring blood glucose levels, the new Apple Watch smartwatch will also be able to measure blood alcohol levels.

Apple turned out to be the largest customer of British electronics startup Rockley Photonics. The company has developed non-invasive optical sensors to measure several blood-related health indicators, including blood pressure, blood glucose and blood alcohol levels, many of which can usually only be detected with more invasive specialized medical equipment. Rockley sensors emit infrared light through the user’s skin, much like existing sensors on the back of the Apple Watch to detect heart rate and blood oxygen levels.

Rockley, having revealed that its largest client is Apple, is preparing for a public offering in New York. The company’s filing states that Apple has accounted for the majority of its revenues over the past two years and that it has an ongoing “supply and development agreement” with the company, under which it expects to continue to rely heavily on Apple to obtain most of its revenue.

The company opened an office in San Jose, as well as offices in Oxford, Cardiff, Cork and Helsinki. Rockley said its next-generation sensors could appear in consumer smartwatches and other electronics as early as next year. Presumably, this will happen in the Apple Watch Series 8.

So far, there have been rumors that the upcoming Apple Watch Series 7 will include blood glucose monitoring, but Rockley’s comments may indicate that the feature has been delayed until 2022. It is also possible that blood glucose monitoring may appear in Apple Watch Series 7. And blood alcohol monitoring will appear in Apple Watch Series 8.
