Apple will collect geolocation of users to show the congestion of locations

Apple is actively working on improving its own Maps application, which will soon receive a unique function – the user will be able to view the workload of certain locations based on the geolocation data of the Apple technology owners, which will be collected in anonymous format. This became known thanks to the discovery of a Reddit user with the nickname StijnJB_ – he noticed that Apple updated the information in the privacy section of the “Geolocation Services” section, adding there an item on collecting data about the user’s location and the load of attractions.

Thanks to the new function, the user, for example, does not have to go to a cafe to see how crowded it is at the moment – it will be enough to get a smartphone and open a branded application. It will contain information about how much a certain institution or attraction is visited with a convenient hourly schedule. If a restaurant or an observation deck is now overcrowded with visitors, and after two hours they will not be at all, then the user can adjust his leisure time. Naturally, the question arises about the reliability of the information provided and the anonymity of this data.

Apple said that every time a user opens an application (not specified, we are talking only about Maps or any application on a smartphone), the device will send data about the user’s geolocation to the company’s servers, where the information will be aggregated and analyzed. After that, the data will be formed into a convenient attendance schedule, which is indicated in the application. However, the main competitor in the face of Google has been using similar tools in its own maps for a long time, indicating the attendance of various places in real time.

In addition, another interesting feature was noticed in the new privacy policy of “Geolocation Services” – while traveling on foot or by car, the smartphone will send GPS data to Apple, which will be aggregated to provide traffic information. Naturally, this data will also be provided in encrypted and impersonal form, and Apple, in theory, will be able to demonstrate traffic congestion in real time. Another thing is that not all users will like the fact of total surveillance.
