Applications for civilian firearms licenses soar, says Israeli minister

The Ministry of National Security of Israel Itamar Ben-Gvir, recorded a sharp increase in the number of civilians requesting to obtain a private license to carry fire gun in the country, according to a press release from the ministry.

“A hundreds of percent jump in applications to carry private firearms: since the start of hostilities, approximately 100,000 civilians have applied to obtain a license,” the statement said.

The ministry receives that number of requests, on average, over two years, said David Weizman, head of the Firearms Inspection and Enforcement Division at the Ministry of National Security.

“With the outbreak of hostilities”, the ministry said it “significantly increased the scope of license issuing activity”.

The increase in requests comes after the radical Islamic group Hamas having carried out a terrorist attack on Israeli territory, which caused the death of 1,400 civilians.

In response, Israel went to war with Hamas and provoked a siege in Gaza Strip with the aim of eliminating radical Islamic group. The Israel Defense Forces are preparing a potential ground incursion into territory in Gaza.
