Apprehensions at the southern border of the United States rise 30% in a year

In May of this year, 240,000 people were detained at the US-Mexico border. This number represents a 30% increase compared to the same period in 2021.

This Monday (27), the issue resurfaced after authorities found more than 50 bodies of immigrants in a truck in Texas. The temperature in the region reached 39.4°C, and there was no sign of water or air conditioning working inside the vehicle.

This issue should be one of the focuses of the meeting between presidents Lopez Obrador, of Mexico, and Joe Biden, of the USA, on the 12th of next month.

Lourival Sant’anna, International Analyst at CNN , assesses that Biden is under pressure. The Democrat suspended the construction of a border wall – promised by Donald Trump – and stricter measures against apprehended immigrants, such as the separation of children and adults. So many Republicans blame the president for the current situation on the border.

There was also a significant increase in the migratory flow. Lourival analyzes that one of the factors that contributed to this growth is the pandemic, with more people experiencing economic difficulties and hunger, for example.

In addition, there has been an acceleration in the expulsion of immigrants when asylum application assessments are carried out. Thus, many turn to traffickers to try to cross the border.
