April should end with a new heat wave in Brazil, says Climatempo

The end of April is expected to be marked by high temperatures in the central-southern region of Brazil with another heat wave, according to a forecast from Climatempo. It will be the fourth since the beginning of 2024. Temperatures can be up to 5ºC above average in the region between April 22nd and May 2nd.

An area of high pressure in the middle atmosphere should gain strength over the areas of Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraná, with migration to regions of the Southeast between the end of April and the beginning of May. According to Climatempo, the system should park in the center-south region, forming a kind of atmospheric blockage for the arrival of cold fronts in the Center-West and Southeast of the country and keeping the air dry and warm.

Even in autumn, high temperatures are expected until the beginning of May, a situation that could continue. One of the characteristics of the heat wave is the intensification of air from top to bottom, inhibiting the formation of rain clouds and increasing heat.

The absence of a mass of cold air strong enough to generate a change in weather conditions should keep the air warm in much of Brazil.

See the predicted averages for the next few days:

  • Campo Grande (MS): 29ºC
  • Cuiabá (MT): 33ºC
  • Goiânia (GO): 31ºC
  • São Paulo (SP): 26.6ºC
  • Belo Horizonte (MG): 27.6ºC

For the World Health Organization (WHO), a heat wave is considered when temperatures remain above 5ºC for more than five days in a row.

This scenario should happen in the central and western zone of the state of São Paulo, northwest of Paraná, throughout the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, in the Mineiro triangle and south of Goiás. In these regions, thermometers can exceed 35ºC.

In addition to hot days, early mornings tend to be stuffy in Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná and west of São Paulo, due to the flow of hot air at the turn of April to May.

In the east of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Goiás and the Federal District, temperatures are expected to be 3ºC to 5ºC above average, but with lower minimum temperatures due to dry air.

The attention goes to the thermal amplitude – the distance between the minimum and maximum – which can reach a difference of up to 22°C. Climatempo reports that meteorological models indicate that this pattern will continue until the first week of May.

In addition to the heat wave, the center-north of Paraná, the state of São Paulo – with the exception of the coast –, the northwest and Mineiro triangle, the south of Goiás and the center-east of Mato Grosso do Sul have alerts for relative humidity below of 30%. The WHO establishes humidity as ideal between 50% and 60%.

Care during the heat wave

  • Hydration
  • Avoid sun exposure between 10am and 4pm
  • Applying sunscreen regularly
  • Wear light clothes

In cases of exhaustion or heatstroke, it is necessary to seek medical attention.
