Today, October 15, the information publication RIA Novosti, citing its source in the Russian military-industrial complex, reported that the Novosibirsk Instrument-Making Plant has created the latest augmented reality glasses for military purposes – they will be integrated into the Ratnik equipment for infantrymen. A source told the publication that this novelty allows displaying various information from the command on a special glass panel, which is more convenient to provide by this method, plus it is possible to display an electronic sight and show video from external signal sources.
And although it is not yet possible to assess the advantage of an electronic sight with glasses, just like in video games, the function of demonstrating video from unmanned aerial vehicles allows a fighter to better navigate the terrain, receive data about the enemy from a different angle, or quickly respond to the instructions of the commanding staff without the need to transmit something on the radio. In addition, the latest military goggles can be additionally equipped with a night vision system or a thermal imager, which significantly expands the capabilities of an infantryman on the battlefield and beyond.
True, the cost of one such set of glasses turned out to be quite high – more than 500 thousand rubles, according to the publication. Accordingly, it will be problematic to equip all the infantrymen with this development, but, on the other hand, this is unofficial information, so the price may actually be lower. In addition, it is quite possible that in the future, when new glasses for the army are sent to mass production, the final cost of one set will significantly decrease, or only certain special-purpose units will be equipped with these AR glasses.
